It was a comedy romance – I’m sick – it’s what I chose.
Not your thing? OK… See you next time?
Your Place or Mine (2023)
It wasn’t until I got quite a way into the movie that I realised I was really enjoying this. I am still recovering from being sick, so I feel it’s only fair that I spent my morning laying on the couch, just watching movies. My brain is still a bit foggy so I don’t want to have to do alot other than rest.
I should probably talk about the film now… right?
Your place or Mine is a romantic comedy film that was released on February 10. It’s on Netflix, so you’ll need a subscription or find a friend to watch it with.
Reece Witherspoon plays Debbie, a lovable mum to Jack (Wesley Kimmel), a young teenager struggling with friendships in high school. Ashton Kutcher plays Peter, the best-friend of 20 ish years.
They live in different cities – L.A. and NYC – which I imagine to be like Perth vs Sydney, but I might be wrong on that. They talk frequently on the phone which would have been fine except for the fact that their call starts before Peter gets out of bed. I felt bad for Peter’s girlfriend at the start because it looks like he wakes up and calls Debbie (or Debbie calls him, whichever) before even saying good morning to his girlfriend – which … is it just me or does that seem like a bit of a red flag?
If one of my girlfriends rang me and said “my boyfriend woke up this morning and before even getting out of bed, rang his best friend to chat.” – I’d be wary… Wouldn’t you? Like… that’s a red flag right?
But, my feelings for Becca (Vella Lovell), quickly disappeared. Peter and Debbie chat while they get ready – which is totally fine – but Becca has this line that makes her come across as suddenly jealous.
Peter tries to diffuse the situation – although does not admit that he probably should have at least said good morning to Becca before calling Debbie – and says Becca looks nice which she seems to shrug off. and then he tries to talk about his birthday which Becca ignores and then dumps him. Like what? Weird.
I absolutely loved Alicia (Tig Notaro). Some of her lines – oh my gosh. So good. A sassy best friend I genuinely want in my life.
Although I didn’t really understand Minka’s place in the film. I would have thought that Becca would have done what Minka did… anyway…
Minka (Zoe Chao) turns up at the apartment to have sex with Peter as she is stalking his social media and noticed his girlfriend has indicated they broke up… OK – a bit stalkery, but OK – but then she tries to befriend Debbie. Which – is a little weird.
But then…. she divulges personal information of Peter’s which leads to Debbie trying to get a book deal, sleeping with a publisher and …. it’s just crazy.
I mean, it’s funny and a bit fucked up… but… yeah… crazy.
And Zen… I just…. love the idea of the character but I feel like it missed the mark.
Just watch the trailer…
Anyway, I get the message they were trying to get through which is the person you truly love might be someone in your life that is a friend or someone who’s been in your life for a long time.
I genuinely enjoyed the movie. It was funny and charming. Ashton and Reece make a really cute couple. The story was predictable though, so… watch it with a group of friends or plan a date night.
You could probably zone out and think about whatever you wanted, snuggling on a couch with this one… if romantic comedies are not your thing. Easily digestible with all the warm gooey feels.
Till next time.
