Let me start by saying again, this show has no right to be this entertaining. I know this. You know this. But I can’t help it. I’m addicted to the intense and dangerous adventures these brave guys go on.
From the comfort, and safety, of my couch, each episode has me embarking on a thrilling journey through the treacherous waters of the Bering Sea alongside the brave crew members of these crab fishing vessels. Would you ever catch me out there? Hell no. I ain’t going on a boat…
I found this series a long, long time ago on Foxtel, and since then I’ve hunted libraries, op shops and closing down video stores in order to gain as many episodes as I can. It’s a real shame that the earlier seasons don’t have subtitles. So frustrating!
From the very first episode of Deadliest Catch, I was captivated by the raw intensity and breathtaking action that unfolded on screen. I can’t help but admit that this reality series had me on the edge of my seat, living vicariously through their dangerous and daring exploits – I swear it’s Mike Rowe’s narration... I’ve tried to see as many episodes as I can, however that’s a bit difficult especially when it’s a Discovery show… The show offers a rare glimpse into the high-risk world of commercial crab fishing, where these brave men, and women, battle against the unforgiving elements, relentless storms, and towering waves to bring in their valuable catch. Each episode is a rollercoaster of emotions, filled with triumphs, heartbreaks, and moments of sheer survival.
The show’s strength lies in its ability to transport viewers to the icy waters of the Bering Sea. The cinematography captures the vastness and beauty of the ocean, but also its destructive power. I can’t help but admire the crew that films this series. Their determination to get the shot far outweighs their concern for their own safety – it’s thrilling and exciting at every turn. I found myself in awe of the towering waves crashing against the vessels, feeling a sense of both admiration and fear for the crew members who brave these conditions in pursuit of their livelihoods.
I’m not sure I want to admit that I think I’ve become emotionally invested in their journeys, rooting for their successes and feeling pangs of sadness. The camaraderie and bonds formed among the crew members were noticeable, adding a layer of humanity to the thrilling narrative. It feels like big family...
The downside? I feel like a couch expert in crab fishing in the Bering Sea. The show delves into the intricacies of the fishing process, the strategies of the captains to locate and catch the crab, and the gruelling physical demands placed on the crew members. Veteran fans will know Phil’s fart bubbles well…
But… I also appreciate is its authenticity. The show doesn’t shy away from showcasing the risks and dangers involved in the profession, and there’s been more than one occasion when the coast guard has been called to rescue someone from the treacherous Bering Sea. It’s a stark reminder of the sacrifices made by these fishermen and the price they pay to provide Red King and Bairdi crab – which BTW, I’ve never even tried… are they any good?
I enjoy watching episodes of this while I am crocheting. It’s peaceful to just tune out and try not to think for a while… invest myself in something other than what I’m dealing with in my life. Forget for a while. Do you ever do that?
Till next time.
