Are you curious as to how I’m spending my Thursday night? I’m glad, because I’m going to tell you.
There is a movie I think you need to watch. Everyone should watch it, actually. So yes, I am talking to you…. human. It’s a movie that might actually make you cry… and there are subtitles.
WARNING: It’s a tear-jerker.
And tonight I’m going to watch it again. And enjoy tea.
The voices of a distant star is a spellbinding short film that profoundly impacted me. It’s a Japanese science fiction drama short film created and animated by Makoto Shinkai. If you want to understand the plot, visit the fandom wiki – otherwise don’t spoil it and just watch it. It’s short.
I watched it and it hit me like a freight train. I loved it so much that I watch it… like every year.
It turns out that Makoto Shinkai is a crazy talented director. He has this great ability to evoke emotions through breathtaking visuals and heartfelt storytelling. This anime beautifully captures the essence of love and separation, all while exploring the wonders and challenges of space travel. Because everything is better with space travel.
Actually… you should probably go watch it now. because I think I’m going to talk about the story now… sorry. Here’s a trailer….
The story revolves around two central characters, Mikako and Noboru, who share a close bond and attend the same school. However, their lives take an unexpected turn when Mikako is recruited to join the fight against an alien threat as a part of the United Nations Space Army. Them pesky aliens!
As she travels deeper into the cosmos on her interstellar mission, the distance between them grows exponentially, both physically… and emotionally. Each year I watch Mikako and Noboru’s unyielding desire to remain connected, even if it means overcoming the barriers of time… and space.
And it makes me think about the nature of existence… and the significance of the connections we forge with others. Is that too deep? Too much? >.<
I guess…. it reminds me that the people I cherish most are never truly far away… if we keep reaching out to make those connections… keep them alive in our thoughts and memories.
Till next time.
