Lights dimmed. Anticipation mounting. I got snacks ready for a solo movie night… and I found myself drawn into a world of con artists and FBI agents, seduction and manipulation.
American Hustle – honestly, can someone tell me if there are meant to be ” marks around that?! – anyway…
‘American Hustle’ proved to be a captivating masterpiece. And I’m not just talking about the story… I am compelled to share my absolute fascination with the camera and film techniques that… breathed life into the characters & narrative.
From the very first second of the film, the 70’s vibe is strong. The film completely encapsulated the essence of the 70’s – immersing me in the groovy good times of disco, lavish lifestyles and flamboyant fashion. The set designs, costume department, and cinematography transported me back to an era of indulgence and extravagance. David O. Russell, the director, made the era come alive. Truly…
The film had just the right amount of atmosphere and tension. The close-ups really captured the emotion displayed by the actors. which oh my gosh, let’s talk about…
A Batman, a Redhead, An Avenger, A Guardian of the Galaxy and the hilarious Jennifer Lawrence… honestly – have you seen Jennifer Lawrence getting interviewed? She is amazing. And relatable.
Christian Bale’s transformative performance as Irving was astonishing. I didn’t recognise him to begin with and then I realised… he had effortlessly slipped into the skin of the charming, yet morally ambiguous, con artist. I read somewhere that he gained like 15 kilos for the role or something crazy like that… but I guess it worked because… yeah…
Amy Adams effortlessly slips between American and English accents throughout the film, distinguishing between herself & her con artist alter ego. Plus… did you see her gorgeous hair when it was curly?!
Jennifer Lawrence plays the fiery and unpredictable wife. Her scenes were a whirlwind of emotions, showcasing Rosalyn’s unhinged nature… and her relentless determination to maintain control over her husband’s life.
Bradley Cooper really brought to life the 70’s ambitious and unpredictable FBI agent with his relentless pursuit of bigger fish in the world of corruption… which led me on a rollercoaster of emotions.
Jeremy Renner as Mayor Polito… oh my gosh… it’s like spot on for what I would expect in the 70’s. The corruption and belief that they were ‘doing the best thing for the neighbourhood’ is exactly the reason we need better oversight on these things now. He played his character so well… a charismatic and well-intentioned politician entangled in a high-stakes corruption scheme.
The cast comes together so well. They bring their characters to life through their expressions and delivery. It was an enjoyable couple of hours.
Till next time.
